Long before there were roads, universities, or nearby towns, this land was home to pioneers.

In 1749, John Philip Harless—a German immigrant who had crossed the Atlantic and followed the Appalachian frontier south from Pennsylvania—settled these hills and bottomlands of western Montgomery County. Along with other families seeking a new beginning, he helped establish one of the earliest communities and churches west of the Alleghanies.

Harless married Margaretha Price, joining two families whose names became woven into the history of this part of Virginia. Generations have since lived, worked, and made their homes on the land between Sunnyside and Long Shop.

Today, the property carries that same sense of place: old fields, flowing water, wooded hillsides, and a farmhouse that connects the present to a story that began nearly three centuries ago.
